Unlocking Growth: Non-Traditional Financial Avenues for MSMEs

For most Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), securing growth capital or managing working capital cycles usually means one thing: approaching traditional banks for secured business loans or working capital limits. However, collateral requirements, lengthy documentation processes, and strict credit scoring criteria can often slow down momentum.
Fortunately, India’s financial landscape has evolved rapidly. Today, a variety of alternative financial channels exist—offering faster turnaround times, customized structures, and asset-light borrowing models.
Here is a breakdown of alternative financial avenues available to MSMEs, how they work, and what you need to know to leverage them effectively.
1. Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS)
What It Is
TReDS is an institutional setup authorized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to facilitate the financing of trade receivables of MSMEs from corporate buyers, government departments, and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). Key platforms operating under TReDS include RXIL, M1xchange, and Invoicemart.
How It Works
Invoice Upload: After supplying goods or services, the MSME uploads the digital invoice onto the TReDS platform.
Buyer Acceptance: The corporate buyer or government entity verifies and accepts the invoice online.
Bidding by Financiers: Banks and Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) registered on the platform bid for the invoice at competitive discount rates based on the buyer’s creditworthiness rather than the MSME’s collateral.
Funds Disbursed: The MSME accepts the best bid and receives funds within 24 to 48 hours. The buyer pays the financier on the original due date.
Key Advantage
Without Recourse Financing: In standard TReDS transactions, if the buyer delays payment, the MSME is not held liable for repayment to the financier. It frees up cash flow without adding liability to the MSME’s balance sheet.
2. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Lending & Digital NBFCs
What It Is
Digital-first lenders and RBI-regulated P2P platforms match MSMEs directly with individual or institutional investors seeking returns. Platforms utilize alternative data—such as bank statement cash flows, GST returns, and digital transaction history—to underwrite loans instead of relying solely on physical assets or balance sheet strength.
How It Works
The enterprise applies online by sharing digital records (GST filings, bank statements, digital invoice logs).
Algorithms evaluate cash flow patterns, operational stability, and customer concentration to assign a credit score and interest rate.
Once approved, capital is disbursed directly into the business account, often within a few days.
Key Advantage
Speed and accessibility for businesses that lack hard collateral but possess strong daily or monthly cash inflows.
3. Revenue-Based Financing (RBF)
What It Is
Revenue-Based Financing is an alternative investment model designed for businesses with predictable monthly revenues (such as D2C brands, SaaS providers, e-commerce sellers, and service businesses). Investors provide upfront capital in exchange for a fixed percentage of ongoing gross revenues until a predetermined total payout is met.
How It Works
Instead of fixed monthly EMIs, repayments fluctuate with business performance.
In months with higher sales, the business pays back more; in slower months, repayment drops proportionally.
There is no equity dilution or fixed interest rate schedule.
Key Advantage
Flexibility during seasonal dips or demand fluctuations, as repayments adapt to actual revenues rather than fixed monthly obligations.
4. Co-Lending Models (CLM)
What It Is
Co-lending is a framework introduced by the RBI that allows large commercial banks to partner with nimble NBFCs or FinTech firms to lend jointly to the priority sector, including MSMEs.
How It Works
The NBFC/FinTech handles sourcing, credit assessment, and loan servicing using modern digital tools.
The bank funds the majority of the loan (typically 80%), while the NBFC funds the remaining 20%.
The blended interest rate remains lower than standard NBFC rates because of the bank's participation, while the borrower experiences the seamless digital onboarding of a modern FinTech.
Key Advantage
Combines the low cost of capital associated with traditional banks with the rapid processing times and digital accessibility of FinTech platforms.
5. Equipment & Asset Leasing (Operating & Finance Leases)
What It Is
Rather than purchasing expensive machinery or technology outright using heavy equipment loans, MSMEs can procure equipment through specialized leasing entities.
How It Works
Operating Lease: The lessor owns the asset, and the MSME pays rent for using it over a specific period. Maintenance costs are often handled by the leasing partner, and the asset can be upgraded when the term ends.
Finance Lease: A longer-term structure where the MSME assumes most operational risks and rewards, often with an option to purchase the asset at nominal value at the end of the tenure.
Key Advantage
Preserves liquidity by converting significant capital expenditure (CapEx) into manageable operational expenses (OpEx), helping maintain debt ratios and operational agility.
6. Supply Chain Finance (Vendor & Channel Finance)
What It Is
Supply Chain Finance leverages the strength of large corporate buyers or anchor firms to provide working capital solutions to their network of suppliers and distributors.
How It Works
Vendor Financing: FinTechs or banks fund MSME suppliers against purchase orders or invoices approved by a major anchor corporate.
Channel Financing: Provides short-term working capital limits to MSME distributors and dealers to purchase inventory from key manufacturers.
Key Advantage
Access to short-term credit line limits based on the credit profile of key business partners rather than standalone asset collateral.
Action Plan for MSME Leaders
Clean Digital Footprint: Ensure regular, timely filing of GST returns and maintain clean, digitized bank statements. Alternative credit assessment tools rely on verified data feeds.
Onboard on TReDS: If your primary buyers are large corporations, PSUs, or government departments, getting registered on a TReDS platform can dramatically shorten your cash conversion cycle.
Assess Cost vs. Velocity: Alternative funding mechanisms can sometimes carry higher effective interest costs than traditional PSU bank loans. Weigh the cost against the velocity of capital and business opportunities unlocked.
